On 29 September 2018, a new production of Arnold Schoenberg’s celebrated opera Moses and Aron directed by Calixto Bieito opens at the Semperoper Dresden, with John Tomlinson and Lance Ryan in the title roles of Moses and Aron. Alan Gilbert will conduct, before beginning his new post as principal conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in 2019.
On 2 June, Semperoper Dresden will present Martinů’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 as part of the company’s ballet triple bill titled “100°C”, performed by the Semperoper Ballett and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. The concerto will provide music for choreographer Justin Peck’s ballet “Heatscape”, which will be receiving its European premiere. Although Luigi Dallapiccola’s one-act opera Il prigioniero (The Prisoner) was composed in 1949, the questions it raises about faith, love, hope and freedom are of enduring relevance. On 26 April, a production of the opera opens at Stuttgart Opera under the direction of Andrea Breth, performed by the Staatorchester Stuttgart and conductor Franck Ollu, and with set design by Martin Zehetgruber.
