Description

Paul Hindemith’s fruitful compositional association with American literature is best highlighted by his ‘Lilac Requiem’ based on the poem, When lilacs last in the door-yard bloom’d by Walt Whitman. Hindemith began composing this work – which he temporarily entitled ‘An American Requiem’ – in exile shortly after his naturalization in America.

Incidentally, his admiration of Whitman and this particular poem go back much further: he created a setting of its ninth verse in 3 Hymnen von Walt Whitman in 1919, and again as one of the 9 English Songs (1942–1944), which was also incorporated into the Requiem in orchestrated form. However, Hindemith’s oratorio is not only a tribute to the literature of the country which was so eager to offer him a home, but also an expression of his grief, despair, and sympathy for the fate of the Jews during the Nazi dictatorship.
