Description
As a performance space, podium, and place for discussion, the House of Cultures of the World, founded in Berlin in 1989, demonstrates that what is foreign to us can represent new, unfamiliar ways to experience, understand, shape, and portray the world in art. The sound spectrum of the World Music Edition of the House of Cultures of the World ranges from traditional rural music from the furthest corners of the world through the sounds of millennia-old artistic cultures to popular music from modern metropolises. The focus of these publications is on artists from non-European cultures who remain unknown in Europe. Indian ragas are presented along with klezmer music from Tel Aviv, Brazilian forró, and the exciting musical creations of the Bulgarian Fairy Tale Trio. Advanced musicians who have since become stars on the world music scene, like the Argentine tango singer Silvana Deluigi, are found alongside groups like the southern Vietnamese ensemble Tài Tu Nam Bô, which presents a musical tradition that is almost entirely forgotten even in its homeland. In The Sounds of 10 Years, on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the House of Cultures of the World invited listeners to look back on the most interesting concerts and CDs of its past.
