Emmanuel Chabrier, a contemporary of Richard Wagner, was a great admirer of the German composer. His profound respect can for instance be discerned in his opera Gwendoline, first performed in 1886, but the Quadrille sur le thèmes favoris de ’Tristan et Isolde’ also displays unambiguous links to Wagner’s bestknown opera. Markus Lehmann has in turn instrumented and extended this work to produce Souvenirs de Munich in a version for wind orchestra which is in the words of its subtitle ’additionally musically peppered and with several well-known themes’ from Wagner’s drama of love.
