Description
Heinz Holliger composed his six piano lieder before he had reached the age of twenty. These songs are based on poems by Christian Morgenstern entitled Vorfrühling - Der Abend - Schmetterling - Vöglein Schwermut - Vor Sonnenaufgang - Herbst [Early Spring - Evening - Butterfly - Melancholic Little Bird - Before Sunrise - Autumn]. Holliger subsequently termed this cycle as ’the only work from this period which I really consider to be personal’. He returned to these lieder almost half a century after their composition and provided them with an orchestral dimension thanks to his inimitable force of instrumentation.
