Description

Friedrich Hölderlin’s famous Song of Destiny from his novel Hyperion has inspired many composers to create musical settings of the text. One among them is Dieter Schnebel, who in his final work addressed the concept of fate’s mechanisms in an optimistic, and at times playful manner.
In doing so, Schnebel draws on tradition both directly and indirectly, for example through incorporating an interpretation of the fate motif from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth (‘thus fate knocks at the door’) or the composer’s last words (‘pity, pity, too late’) into the text.
