Description
This symphony was composed by György Ligeti more than 30 years ago, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Now, Schott publishes the study score of this important work which, with regard to the history of composition, marks the end of a stylistic development that ranges from 'Atmosphères' (1961) via 'Lontano' (1967), the 'Wind Quintet' (1968) and 'Melodies for Orchestra' (1971) to 'San Francisco Polyphony'.
Ligeti said: 'While my music in the late 1950s was mainly based on "micropolyphony", i.e. on the technique of closely and tightly combining instrumental parts (vocal parts too), I tended towards a kind of polyphony from the mid-1960s which was more transparent, more clearly marked, thinner and more brittle.'
