Post-scriptum

orchestra
Technically speaking, this work is a variation on the theme of Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question. We hear a theme constructed out of a five-note row. ‘Kissine conjures up visionary, shimmering and ephemeral effects. Imagine that you are standing in a bank of fog and Debussy momentarily looms up – in frozen and magnified form. Dozens of these micro-details are interwoven in recurring threads – like a wave undulating ominously through the orchestra in piano […]. The music is exceedingly elaborate, but beneath its reticent façade an emotional depth can be discerned verging towards Romanticism.’ (Richard Scheinin)

Description

From a formal point of view, this piece is a variation on the theme of Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question, but what we actually hear is a theme constructed on five different tones. There are however really six tones as each time the question is repeated, the final tone is altered by sounding over the previous interval at a major or minor third. The concept, subject, form, tonal order and orchestration of my Post-scriptum are all exactly based on this alternating sequence. Victor Kissine
