Mauthausen

Mauthausen

Cantata for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra

orchestrated by Tasos Karakatsanis (1993)

text by Iakovos Kambanellis

  • Instrumentation: Mezzosoprano, choir and orchestra
  • Edition: performance material
  • Language: Greek

Description
In his Mauthausen cycle Mikis Theodorakis sets four poems of the same title by Iakovos Kambanelli. Kambanelli’s poems are based on the memories of his imprisonment in Mauthausen concentration camp. The plaintive character of the cantata made Theodorakis search for new tone colours never heard before in his works.

‘The Mauthausen songs are primarily addressed to those who suffered under fascism and struggled against it. We all have to bear in mind the crimes of the Nazis because this is the precondition that such crimes will not be repeated.’ (Mikis Theodorakis)
