Pablo Picasso’s monumental mural Guernica (1937) is a moving memorial to a terrible event in the Spanish Civil War and its emotional immediacy was meant to shock. A similar expressiveness can be found in Luigi Nono’s cantata La Victoire de Guernica after Paul Eluard’s poem of the same name which was written under the spell of Picasso’s painting and corresponded to Nono’s passionate call for art to make a political statement.
