Description
To write a concerto for piano and orchestra has been one of my greatest dreams since my career as a musician began. The genre of piano concerto which I have often experienced intensely thanks to my husband who is a pianist, is, without any doubt, one of the most popular and most interesting genres of all, having always inspired composers in the past to create very special and extraordinary works.
It was with a mixture of pleasure, curiosity and great respect that I embarked on the project to write my first piano concerto. It took some time to drop my respect for this genre; during my work, however, I was caught up more and more in its current. I really enjoyed probing the musical possibilities of the concertante style existing between piano and orchestra. The concerto does not deny that it is written absolutely in the tradition of 19th and 20th century piano concertos. I did not tackle the task in order to 'rediscover America'. I just wanted to write a work that gives rise to joy. Joy in the music, joy in playing, joy of life – as I feel it. I am very grateful to Heinrich Schiff and the Musikkollegium Winterthur for the commission and the suggestion to write this piano concerto. Tatjana Komarova
