In memoriam Igor Stravinskij

The composer Evžen Zámečník, born in 1939, imaginatively employs themes from Le sacre du printemps in his homage to Igor Stravinsky; he transplants the wild ‘Dance of the Young Girls’ into the calm atmosphere of the introductory sostenuto. Here he also quotes the note repetitions with asymmetrical accentuation soft ly on the tom-tom above sustained notes held by five solo cellos. One of the cello soloists intones the famous bassoon solo from the introduction of Le sacre, which Zámečník subsequently uses to create a large and lively fugue in the central section. The composition concludes with the peaceful sounds from the opening section, this time scored for the whole orchestra.
