Description

This CD presents the works by Philipp Maintz in balance between expressive tone clusters and fragile structures. “A tense chasm sometimes gapes between the meticulously constructed textures of Philipp Maintz' compositions and the drastic pictorial or literary associations”, as Marie Luise Maintz writes in the CD booklet. His works are based on serial techniques which he uses to develop formal, rhythmic, harmonic and motivic structures that already exist in literature and historical music. The excessive “overpainting” of the material thus created is characteristic of Maintz‘ way of working.

The CD examines various facets of his oeuvre. The vocal works “fluchtlinie” and “wenn steine sich gen himmel stauen”, both performed with the soloist Otto Katzameier, form the framework of instrumental works recorded by musicians of the Berlin Scharoun Ensemble and the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin specifically for this CD. The Grand Organ of St. Eustache in Paris can be heard in the recording, also newly produced, of “ferner, und immer ferner” in which “the sensuous, haptic performance, resulting in the sensually opulent, of Francesco Filidei [testifies] to the profound intensity of the instrument”. (Marie Luise Maintz)
