Description

Krzysztof Penderecki has made two previous settings of the ‘Dies irae’, first in 1967 in his oratorio Dies irae in remembrance of the victims of Auschwitz and then in 1984 in the Polish Requiem. His most recent work, Dies illa, differs considerably from these first two settings in its treatment of text and musical makeup. As the title implies, not all of the words from the Latin text are used, and they aren’t set to music in the traditional order. Penderecki divides his piece in eight sections, two of them to be performed a cappella.
