Description

Oedipus the King is banished from Thebes when his disgrace is discovered. It is in the darkest hours of his fate that Conrad Beck’s story begins, as Oedipus travels to Mount Colonos to die in atonement. He finds redemption by adhering strictly to the prophecy of the oracle, and no longer denying his destiny.

Der Tod des Oedipus can be considered as a counterpart to Arthur Honegger’s Le Roi David, and is structurally more a brief oratorio than a cantata. The work’s dark underlying tone is created by trombones and organ, and is particularly suitable for choral concerts with a small-scale instrumental ensemble and group of soloists.
