Der selbstsüchtige Riese

(The Selfish Giant)
Ballet based on the fairytale of the same name by Oscar Wilde
speaker (or tape), instrumental ensemble and dancers
Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale of ’The Selfish Giant’ is a classic work of world literature. Once the giant has banned the children from playing in his garden, winter sets in with snow, frost, the North wind and hailstormes. Winter is followed by spring, but not in the giant’s garden. Having realised in his winter solitude how selfishly he has behaved, the giant welcomes the children back into his garden.

Description

The selfish giant has banned the children from playing in his garden, but when winter sets in, it is only snow, frost, the North wind and hailstorms who come to play. Winter is followed by spring, but not in the giant’s garden. Having realised in his winter solitude how selfishly he has behaved, the giant welcomes the children back into his garden.

‘The selection of instruments provides a wide tonal spectrum with great possibilities of variation. The contrabass clarinet contributes a visual impression of the giant not merely restricted to the music, metal blocks and hard vibraphone sounds give a vivid impression of a hailstorm and long held notes almost coming to a standstill on cello and vibraphone depict the frost. Even the dancers slip out of their roles as children playing to represent snowflakes, the North wind, hail and frost.’ (Elisabeth Naske)

The Selfish Giant is well suited for children’s and youth concerts, as well as for school performances for all ages within the field of pantomime, puppets and shadow Play.
