Description

On Good Friday 1770, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart experienced a performance of the nine-part Miserere by the Italian composer Gregorio Allegri in the Sistine Chapel. A papal decree prohibited the copying of this music but Mozart ignored it and wrote down the work from memory. This incident provided me with the inspiration to compose Cappella Sistina for soprano solo, orchestra and echo quartet for the Mozart Festival in Augsburg. The echo quartet quotes Allegri’s Miserere towards the end of the work. Wilfried Hiller
