About Yumiko Meguri

Yumiko Meguri was born in Tokyo. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Toho-Gakuen School of Music, she studied with György Sebök at the University of Indiana from which she received an artist diploma with highest honours. Meguri made a highly acclaimed debut in Tokyo and since then has been invited to perform in major cities in Japan, Europe, and Asia. Her repertoire ranges from Renaissance music to avant-garde pieces. She premiered and recorded a large number of contemporary works. The recitals Meguri gave in Tokyo were often acknowledged as “Best concerts of the year” by many music magazines in Japan. Also, she has released several CDs with works by, among others, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, John Cage, Joseph Haydn, Bruce Stark, Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Frederic Chopin, Domenico Scarlatti, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Igor Stravinsky, George Crumb. These CDs were often chosen as “Best CDs“ by many music magazines. Besides that, Meguri had performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and many other orchestras. She also performed as the soloist during the Japanese premiere of Toru Takemitsu's “Arc” for piano and orchestra, which is known as one of the composer’s monumental works. Since 2008, Meguri has been producing a music festival that runs twice a year at Salon Tessera in Tokyo. She is currently a professor in the Piano De part ment of Toho-Gakuen School of Music.
