Uri  Caine

Uri Caine was born in Philadelphia. Early piano lessons took place with Bernard Pfeiffer followed by studies at the University of Pennsylvania as well as composition lessons with George Rochberg and George Crumb. In recent years Caine has played with musicians such as Don Byron, Dave Douglas, John Zorn, Terry Gibbs, Buddy De Franco, Clark Terry, Rashid Ali, Arto Lindsay, Sam Rivers, Barry Altschul, in the Woody Herman Band, with Annie Ross, the Enya Band, Global Theory and the Master Musicians of Jajouka.

Caine has appeared at jazz festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, in Montreal, Monterey, San Sebastian and Newport as well as at the Salzburger Festspiele, with the Bavarian State Opera, Holland Festival, IRCAM and the Lincoln Center. Caine has been commissioned by Volksoper Vienna, the Seattle Chamber Players, Beaux Arts Trio, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Concerto Köln and the American Composers Orchestra. In 2003 he was Artistic Director of the Venice Biennale Festival of Music. Performances of his arrangement of the “Diabelli Variations” have taken place with the Cleveland Orchestra, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, CBC Radio Orchestra and Swedish Chamber Orchestra among others. From 2006 to 2009, Caine was Composer in residence with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

Caine has recorded 21 CDs as band leader including those with his jazz trio, the Bedrock Trio as well as with his own ensemble featuring arrangements of Mahler, Wagner, Beethoven, Bach and Schumann. In 2010, the CD “12 Caprices” was released, featuring a collaboration with the Arditti Quartet.
