About Sylvain Cambreling

Sylvain Cambreling, General Music Director of the Stuttgart Opera, was born in Amiens (France) and studied at the local conservatory as well as at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1975 he became Choir Director of the Opéra Nouveau Lyon, in 1976 Guest Conductor of the Ensemble intercontemporain. He made his debut at the Opéra National de Paris in 1978 with Offenbach's Les Contes d’Hoffmann. From 1981 to 1991 he was General Music Director of the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels and from 1993 to 1997 Artistic Director and General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera (under his direction “Opera House of the Year” in 1996). In 1994 he was named “Conductor of the Year”.

From 1999 to 2011 Cambreling was Principal Conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg with which he recorded the orchestral works of Olivier Messiaen, among others. For these recordings he received the ECHO Klassik Award as well as the German Record Critics' Award as Conductor of the Year in 2009 and the MIDEM Contemporary Music Award in 2010.

He gave guest performances with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, the Munich Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others, as well as regular performances at the Salzburg Festival. Since 1997 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of Klangforum Wien and since 2010 Principal Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

In February 2012 Cambreling was awarded the Premio Lírico Teatro Campoamor 2011 of Oviedo (Spain) for his musical direction of Messiaen’s Saint François d'Assise at the Teatro Real in Madrid. In 2012 Sylvain Cambreling received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
