Sarah Nemtsov (née Reuter) was born in Oldenburg in 1980. She started composing at the age of eight. As a young protégé, she studied composition with Nigel Osborne at Hanover University of Music and Theater. From 2000 she studied with Johannes Schöllhorn at the same institution, and beginning in 2005 she was a master scholar of Walter Zimmermann at Berlin University of the Arts, where she took her degree with distinction. She also has a performance degree on the oboe, which she studied with Klaus Becker (Hanover) and Burkhard Glaetzner (Berlin). She won various awards, including the Hanns-Eisler-Preis and the ZONTA-Musikpreis, and received grants “inter alia”from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, Aribert-Reimann-Stiftung, the Wilfried-Steinbrenner-Stiftung, the Berlin Senate, and the Stiftung Zurückgeben. In 2011 she was a fellow at the Villa Serpentara (Italy). In 2012 she was awarded the “Deutscher Musikautorenpreis” for the support of upcoming composers.

Nemtsov’s music is frequently marked by a confrontation with literature and other art forms. Her more recent works also probe the boundary between concert music and music theater.
