Composer, conductor, pianist Ryan Wigglesworth was born in Yorkshire in 1979. Educated at Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, between 2007 and 2009 he was a Lecturer at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College.

His orchestral work, Sternenfall, written for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and premiered under the composer’s direction in February 2008, firmly established Wigglesworth as one of the leading composers of his generation. Augenlieder, an orchestral song cycle for soprano Claire Booth was commissioned by BBC SO and premiered with Wiggleworth conducting in November 2009. It went on to receive the vocal prize at the 2010 British Composer Awards.

More recent works include Locke's Theatre, commissioned for the BBC SO and Aldeburgh to celebrate Benjamin Britten's 100th birthday on 22 November 2013 and Echo and Narcissus, a dramatic cantata for mezzo, baritone, three female voices and piano co-commissioned by Aldeburgh, Wigmore Hall and Musik im Riesen and premiered at the 2014 Aldeburgh Festival by Pamela Helen Stephen, Mark Padmore and the composer.

Ryan Wiggesworth was Daniel R. Lewis Composing Fellow with The Cleveland Orchestra 2013-2015, for whom he wrote Études-Tableaux, premiered in 2015 under Franz Welser-Möst. He is currently Artist-in-Residence with English National Opera, where he conducts regularly. The residency culminates in the 2017 premiere of his first opera, The Winter's Tale.

Wigglesworth has a continuing relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra. He has conducted over forty premieres, introducing major works by Harrison Birtwistle, Elliott Carter and Alexander Goehr, and including the music of Oliver Knussen, from whom he works closely. In 2013 he conducted the revival of Birtwistle’s The Minotaur with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and a new production of Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are and Higgelty, Piggelty, Pop! with the Britten Sinfonia for Aldeburgh and the Barbican.

A disc on NMC Recordings of orchestral works by Harrison Birtwistle with Wigglesworth conducting the Hallé won awards from Gramophone and BBC Music magazines. A disc of his orchestral works was released by NMC in 2015.

Ryan Wigglesworth is represented as a conductor by Jonathan Groves at Ingpen & Williams.
