About Robin Gritton

Robin Gritton, educated at the Royal College of Music in London, began his career as a pianist, organist, cellist, and singer before establishing himself as a conductor. As a singer he worked with such famous ensembles as the BBC Singers and the John Alldis Choir, whose tours took him to many countries of the world.
Since 1980 he has conducted the Netherlands Radio Choir. He has conducted significant orchestras in Europe’s important concert halls. Since 1992 he has been first guest conductor of the NDR Chor and its principal conductor since 1995. Many years of work with choirs have taken Robin Gritton beyond the standard repertoire and into close contact with contemporary composers such as Hans Werner Henze, Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis. Robin Gritton conducted the Rundfunkchor Berlin in nearly all it’s a cappella concerts of recent years. In addition, he has prepared the choir for many ambitious choral symphonic tasks, and he is held in extraordinarily high regard by such colleagues as Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, James Levine, Marek Janowski, Kent Nagano, Sir Simon Rattle, Jeffrey Tate, and many others.
Several of his collaborations with the choir have been recorded on CD: a prize-winning recording of Paul Hindemith’s choral works (WERGO CD WER 66422), Sergey Rachmaninoff’s Vespers Mass, op. 37, for mixed chorus a cappella, Johannes Brahms’s “Liebeslieder”, op. 52, and the choral works of Richard Strauss.
