About Piia Komsi

Piia Komsi, soprano, was born in Finland and studied cello at Yale University before beginning her vocal studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Her breakthrough came in 1999 when she played the Chamber Maid in Thomas Adès’s opera Powder Her Face. Her repertoire ranges from Baroque opera to the great coloratura roles in operas of the 18th century opera, and includes numerous operatic premieres. Her opera roles include Martha (António Panisello: Le Malentendu), Venus and Gepopo (György Ligeti: Le Grand Macabre), Pamina and the Queen of the Night (Wolfgang Amadeus Morzart: The Magic Flute), Medea (Pascal Dusapin: Medeamaterial), Cheshire Cat (Unsuk Chin: Alice in Wonderland), Richard Wagner’s Brünnhilde, and the cello-playing Daughter in Heinz-Juhani Hofmann’s Ahti Karjalainen. Engagements have taken her to the great opera houses of the world. In concerts, she has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony (London and Wales), the North German Radio (Hamburg), the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Intercontemporain (Paris), the Musikfabrik (Cologne), and Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt).
