About Philipp Maintz

Philipp Maintz was born in 1977 in Aachen, where he began taking composition lessons from Michael Reudenbach in 1993. From 1997 he studied composition with Robert HP Platz at Maastricht Conservatory, taking a degree with distinction in 2003. This was followed by periods of study at the Centre de Recherches et de Formations Musicales de Wallonie (CRFMW) of Liège University, at the IRCAM in Paris, and with Karlheinz Essl at the Studio for Advanced Music & Media Technology in Linz, Austria (2003–05). He has received many awards and scholarships, including the International Holiday Courses for New Music in Darmstadt and the International Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam (both 2002), the Schreyahn Artists’ Retreat in Lower Saxony (2004), a composer’s grant from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation (2005), and a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation (2006). These were followed by a period of study at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2007), a resident fellowship at the Schloss Solitude Academy (2009), and a scholarship from the German Academy in Rome (Villa Massimo, 2010). In 2013 he was artist-in-residence at Château de Chambord on the Loire River.

His opera “Maldoror” was premièred at the Munich Biennale for New Music Theater in 2010. Maintz is currently working on a set of orchestral lieder commissioned by the Munich Philharmonic and scheduled to be premièred by Marisol Montalvo and Christoph Eschenbach in the 2013–14 season. He has also been commissioned by the Bonn Beethovenfest to write a work for Ensemble musikFabrik, to be performed in the 2014–15 season, and by the Musica Strasbourg Festival to write a piano concerto for Jean-Frédéric Neuburger.

Among the musicians who have performed Maintz’s music are the Arditti Quartet, the Minguet Quartet, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble musikFabrik, Ensemble 2e2m, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Aachen SO, the Basel SO, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, and the Munich Philharmonic.
