About Nazar Kozhukhar

Nazar Kozhukhar (b. 1969) is a violinist, violist, conductor, teacher, and founder of The Pocket Symphony Orchestra. Although active in the area of New Music, Kozhukhar has made his reputation particularly through the interpretation of Early Music played on historical instruments. He studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Oleg Kagan, won several international violin competitions, received diplomas in both modern and baroque violin from Boston University (1993), was soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra (1996), and in 2000 graduated from the conducting class of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. From 1996 to 2002, he was a professor for chamber music and violin at the Moscow Conservatory and was a partner in the founding of the Faculty for Historical and Modern Performance Practice; in addition, he has organized festivals for New Music as well as competitions for young composers and has himself participated in numerous international festivals. Among his concert partners have been Sviatoslav Richter, Natalia Gutman, Tatiana Grindenko, Alexei Lubimov, Martin Haselboeck, and Max van Egmont. Kozhukhar has been concertizing also on the viola, the viola d’amore, and the viola da gamba.
