About Matthias Krüger

Matthias Krüger was born in Ulm in 1987 and grew up in Brussels and Trier. He studied composition and Romance studies in Cologne, Paris (Sorbonne, IRCAM) and New York (Columbia University), and is currently a doctoral candidate at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. Among his composition teachers are Johannes Schöllhorn, Krzysztof Meyer and Fabien Lévy. He has received many awards and distinctions, including two German Academic Exchange Scholarships (DAAD), a second prize at the Berlin Mendelssohn Competition, the Bernd-Alois-Zimmermann Award (Cologne), the Prix Chevillion-Bonnaud (Orléans) and a fellowship by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. He has been nominated for the Gaudeamus Award and several times for the North Rhine-Westphalia Young Artists Fellowship. With support from the North Rhine-Westphalia Arts Foundation, he was artist-in-residence in Istanbul in 2015. Other residencies include the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Matthias Krüger’s music has been performed at such festivals as the Donaueschinger Musiktage, ECLAT (Stuttgart), Festival de Royaumont, Gaudeamus Music Week, Warsaw Autumn, Tzlil Meudcan (Tel Aviv) and the Shanghai New Music Week, and at such leading venues as the Berlin Konzerthaus, Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) and Carnegie Hall (New York). Among the musicians he has worked with are the ensembles recherche, Aventure, Fukio Saxophone Quartet, Ascolta, BRuCH, Inverspace, IEMA and hand werk, as well as Slagwerk Den Haag, Oerknal, PluralEnsemble (Madrid) and Meitar (Tel Aviv).
