Mathis  Mayr

The cellist Mathis Mayr, born in 1972, is a member of ensemble mosaik since 2008. His main focus is in new and improvised music, with a special interest in microtonality and traditional folk music. He studied Cello at the Musikhochschule München with Helmar Stiehler and later in Sydney/ Australia with his most important mentor Uzi Wiesel. He furthered his studies in modal music and Oud with Ziad Rajab and got additional inspiration from the oud-players Thimios Atzakas and Kamylia Jubran.

He formed the band Pain Perdu together with Sebo Flaig (percussion) and Bastian Duncker (Sax/ Ney); the name of their first album, recorded by sound producer Sebastian Schottke, is Brandströmer. He plays chamber music regularly with Antonis Anissegos (piano), the EMP-String Quartet, the Synth-Krautrock legend Jochen Irmler, the composers Carl Friedrich Oesterhelt and Richard van Schoor, Jongsuk Kim (piano) and as a trio with Ernst Surberg and Liping Ting (performance, vocalization).
