Magnus Lindberg, born 1958 in Helsinki, Finland; studied composition with Einojuhani Rautavaara and Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy there, as well as piano with Maija Helasvuo. Studied at the EMS electronic studio in Stockholm and later at IRCAM in Paris. Master classes with Franco Donatoni, private studies with Vinko Globokar and Gérard Grisey. Co-founder of the Toimii ensemble and member of the Korvat auki group, 1980. Artistic director of the Meltdown festival at the Southbank Centre, 1996. Composer in residence with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009. Honors include the Prix Italia, the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award (1993) and the Wihuri Sibelius Prize (2003).
