Louis Andriessen, born 1939 in Utrecht. Studied with his father Henrik and with Kees van Baaren at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Studied with Luciano Berio in Milan and Berlin, 1962–64. Composing work supplemented by teaching positions since 1974. De Volharding and Hoketus ensembles named after his pieces. Additional collaborations with Asko and Schönberg Ensemble, Nederlands Kamerkoor, San Francisco Symphony, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Kronos and Arditti Quartets, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Icebreaker, Bang on a Can All-Stars and California E.A.R. Unit.
