About Kahiba

KAHIBA, "a piece of luck" says Martin Laurentius of the German magazine "Jazzthing". With saxophonist ⁄ flutist Heinrich von Kalnein, drummer ⁄ electronic musician Gregor Hilbe and accordionist ⁄ pianist Christian Bakanic three musician's personalities of the most different origin and generation meet; everybody equally self–sufficiently as experienced, with own will and breath–taking virtuosity.

KAHIBA play a virtuoso and unique mixture of jazz, Musica Brasileira, Zydeco, electronics and "Folklore of Imaginaire". Free from stylistic compulsions and without blinkers three improvisation artists together and playfully invent their very own music.

For many years German saxophonist and bandleader Heinrich von Kalnein has been an active force within the European scene. In the 1990ies he got wider acclaim with his HvK Group (among others the French guitarist Nguyên Lê) as well as with the Indo–Jazz fusion project "Free Winds". Tours to India, Sri Lanka, Russia, Mexico and the US followed. In 2008 he came to international fame after the release of JBBG – jazz bigband graz fifth production "Electric Poetry" (Intuition Records) blending the world of jazz with electronics.

Swiss drummer and sounddesigner Gregor Hilbe was a member of the renowned Vienna Art Orchestra. For many years he worked in the electronic scenes in Paris as well as in London. Together with American bassist John Silverman and Austrian reedplayer Gerald Preinfalk he co–lead the trio "République Électrique". He is performing worldwide with singer ⁄ songwriter Juana Molina, his own project "BOWW" as well as the ensembles "Tangocrash", the Swiss–based "Exorbitantes Kabinett" and JBBG – jazz bigband graz.

Austrian newcomer Christian Bakanic got to national fame with the ensembles "Beefolk" and "Folksmilch". Next to his love for jazz and Balkan music he has a profound knowledge of the Argentinian tango tradition. Besides being a virtuoso on all of his instruments he is a very fine composer as well.
