Isao  Nakamura

Born: 1958
Country of origin: Japan
Isao Nakamura was born in Osaka in 1958. At the age of eight, he made his debut with traditional Matsuri drums at a festival in Japan. He studied with K. Muramoto, M. Aruga, M. Takahashi, and B. Wulff at the Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Music in Freiburg.

Numerous concert tours have taken him throughout Europe and the Far East as a soloist and chamber music partner in works by John Cage, Heinz Holliger, Toshio Hosokawa, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Luigi Nono, Wolfgang Rihm, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Isao Nakamura has appeared at numerous international festivals and has performed with prominent conductors such as Lothar Zagrosek, Peter Eötvös, Rupert Huber, Steven Sloane, and Jonathan Stockhammer. He has played with the orchestras of the Bavarian Radio, West German Radio, Saarland Radio, Southwest German Radio, and the Stuttgart Opera. In addition to numerous radio productions, Nakamura took part in the DVD recording of Ekstasis by Dieter Schnebel (Schott NZ 51).

He was awarded the Kranichstein Music Prize in 1986, the Aoyama Music prize in 1992, and the Saji Keizo Prize in 2004. Isao Nakamura taught at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt from 1994 to 2006, and has been a professor at the University of Music in Karlsruhe since 1992.
