About Georg Christoph Biller

Georg Christoph Biller, born in 1955, was choirmaster and organist of St.
Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1992 until January 2015. He received his first
musical training as a St. Thomas choirboy from 1965 to 1974. Biller attended the
University of Music and Theater in Leipzig from 1976 to 1981, where he studied
singing and conducting, the latter with Rolf Reuter and Kurt Masur. From 1980 to
1991, Biller directed the Gewandhaus Choir in Leipzig and also taught choir
directing at the church music school in Halle. In 1982, he received a diploma in
orchestral conducting from the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
Biller has been a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin since 1983, and
received the city of Osaka’s music prize in 1985. In 1991 and 1992, he taught
choral conducting at the music universities in Frankfurt and Detmold. Since 2009,
he has been a professor for orchestral conducting in Leipzig. Biller is an honorary
patron of the Schönberg Music Summer and the Leipzig Bach Festival, and in
2013 was named an honorary member of the Richard Wagner Society in Leipzig.
