About Florian Ross
A very distinctive feature of this album is the personal style of the young German composer, arranger and pianist Florian Ross. His pieces, on the one hand, are proof of the good ear of the composer who is thoroughly trained in theory, and, on the other hand, give expression to virtuoso demanding jazz combining improvised and notated music. From the musical point of view, Florian Ross' arrangements can be described as groovy and easily swinging modern mainstream, showing both his observant look for the multifarious jazz tradition and his individual treatment of contemporary music.Apart from winning numerous international awards such as the first prize of the Thad Jones Competition of the Danish Radio Big Band in 2002 and a scholarship of the New York University, Florian Ross has written compositions and arrangements for major ensembles such as the Metropole Orchestra Hilversum, the Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, as well as for the broadcasting companies NDR, WDR, HR, SWR and BBC London.
Born in Baden-Württemberg in 1972, Florian Ross first trod unusual paths. In 1995, unlike other musicians, he felt the urge to go to England instead of New York, the capital of jazz. This one-year stay had consequences for his development as a composer. Inspired by the music of English 20th-century composers such as Benjamin Britten, Peter Warlock and Edward Elgar, he wrote the Suite for Soprano Sax and String Orchestra, a work for large orchestra and jazz trio, which embeds the lyric sounds of the Event String Ensemble in the elaborate jazz harmonies of the piano trio consisting of Florian Ross at the piano, Jochen Rückert at the drums, and Dietmar Fuhr at the double-bass, while at the same time being caressed by ample melodies of the Guest saxophonist David Liebman.
But Florian Ross who is currently living in Cologne, is an experienced jazz musician as well: His debut album of 1998, Seasons & Places (Naxos Jazz), proves him to be a virtuoso jazz pianist, accompanied by remarkable rising stars of the young music scene in Cologne (with Nils Wogram and the already mentioned Jochen Rückert among others). The modern jazz arrangements take up tendencies of hard bop but are also partly reminiscent of impressionistic pictures. With Lilacs and Laughter, a brass Project, also released by Naxos Jazz, Florian Ross recalls even more thorougly the origins of jazz, yet moves far away from rigid big band routine.
He played and worked with: Vince Mendoza, Bob Brookmeyer, Bamberg Symphonic Big Band, Peter Bolte, Tommy Smith, Scottisch National Jazz Orchestra, Jeff Cascaro, Jim McNeely, Dave Liebman, Don Friedman, Kenny Wheeler, Ron Mclure, Joe Lovano, Eric Vloeimans, Nils Wogram, John Hollenbeck, Bill Dobbins, Paul Heller, Michael Buckley and Ronan Guilfoyle.
