About Florian Hoelscher

Florian Hoelscher studied piano with Robert Levin, Michel Béroff, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard in Freiburg, Paris, and Cologne. He was also significantly influenced by his work with the composer and conductor Peter Eötvös.

Hoelscher’s repertoire includes solo works and chamber music from the 17th to the 21st centuries. He is particularly dedicated to new music for the piano and has for many years collaborated closely with important contemporary composers, among them Marco Stroppa, Alberto Posadas, and Jonathan Harvey. As a soloist, he has performed with many of the world’s leading conductors, including Peter Eötvös, Christopher Hogwood, David Zinman, Francois-Xavier Roth, Kent Nagano, Sylvain Cambreling, and Johannes Kalitzke. Hoelscher has appeared with distinguished orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden/Freiburg, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Symphoniker Hamburg, and the Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra. Hoelscher’s chamber music partners have included Pirmin Grehl, Jean-Guihen Queyras, and Chen Halevi.

Florian Hoelscher has been a guest soloist at prominent festivals: Présences (Radio France, Paris), Agora (IRCAM, Paris), Eclat Stuttgart, the Bartók Festival in Szombathély, the Salzburg Festival, the Heidelberg Frühling, the Lucerne Festival, and the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen in Hanover. He has also performed in many of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Tonhalle in Zürich, and the Philharmonie in Luxemburg.

Florian Hoelscher’s work is documented in numerous recordings. His recordings of solo and duo works by Jonathan Harvey and Marco Stroppa’s Miniature estrose have won a number of awards, among them the Diapason d’Or. His interpretation of solo pieces by Salvatore Sciarrino was praised by critics around the world.

Florian Hoelscher is a founding member of the Stuttgart ensemble, ascolta, with which he appears regularly at numerous contemporary music festivals.

From 2008 to 2018, Hoelscher was a professor for piano and chamber music at the Hochschule for Music in Lucerne. Since 2018, he has been a professor at the Hochschule for Music and the Performing Arts in Frankfurt.
