About Christoph Poppen

Christoph Poppen, from the beginning of his conducting career, has been associated with innovative programming and wide-ranging support for contemporary music. Numerous guest appearances have taken him to the Bamberg Symphony, the Vienna Symphony, the symphony orchestras in Detroit and Indianapolis (USA), the DSO Berlin, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the French Radio, the State Symphony Orchestra in São Paulo, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Salzburg Camerata.

Also frequently engaged as an opera conductor, Poppen was from 1995 to 2006 Conductor and Artistic Director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra, for which he developed a new profile. His unmistakable programming based on contrasts between Classic and Contemporary music, including numerous commissioned works, has attracted international attention.

In 2006, Poppen became Principal Conductor of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, also assuming in his first season the artistic responsibility for the fusion with the Kaiserslautern Radio Orchestra. From 2007 to 2011, Poppen was then Principal Conductor of the newly designated German Radio Philharmonic in Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern. Christoph Poppen is also the founder and Artistic Director of the International Music Festival in Marvão in Portugal.
