Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks

About Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks

The Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Choir of the Bavarian Radio) was founded in 1946. The choir’s artistic rise was closely connected with the symphony orchestra of the Bavarian Radio. The principal conductor of both ensembles has been Mariss Jansons since 2003. Since the summer of 2016, Howard Arman has been artistic director.

Collaborating regularly with both orchestras of the Bavarian Radio, the choir has presented a number of versatile programmes in the choir’s subscription concert series. The choir focusses on contemporary vocal music as well as collaborations with original sound ensembles, among others. Thanks to its special tonal homogeneity and stylistic versatility, covering all areas of choral singing from medieval motet to contemporary work, from oratorio to opera, this ensemble enjoys the highest regard throughout the world. Guest appearances of the choir include performances in Japan as well as at festivals in Lucerne and Salzburg.

Europe’s top orchestras value the collaboration with the choir. At the BR’s “musica viva” and in the “Paradisi gloria” concert series as well as in its own subscription concerts, the choir regularly makes its mark with world premieres. For its CD recordings the choir won numerous prestigious awards, such as the ECHO Klassik 2014 (within the category „Ensemble of the Year“). In 2015 the choir received the Bavarian State Prize for Music in the category for “Professional music-making”.
