About Atvars Lakstīgala

Since 2010, Atvars Lakstīgala has been the chief conductor of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and since 2009 a guest conductor at the Latvian National Opera. From 1997 to 2010, Lakstīgala was a professional French horn player, a winner of international competitions. As a conductor, he received the Latvian “Grand Music Award” in 2010 for the best debut performance and was nominated for outstanding interpretation in 2014. In his career at the Latvian National Opera, he has conducted performances of “La traviata”, “Un ballo in maschera”, “Tosca”, “Mikhail and Mikhail Play Chess”, “Love for Three Oranges”, “Eugene Onegin”, “Il trittico”, as well as the ballets “The Lady of the Camellias” and “Three meetings”. Critics and public have praised the conducting of Atvars Lakstīgala with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Bari Symphony Orchestra, the Rome Symphony Orchestra, the Milli Reasürans in Istanbul, the South Westphalian Philharmonic, the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica in São Paulo, and the LSO during its China-India tour. Born in Riga, Atvars Lakstīgala studied conducting with Lutz Köhler at the Berlin University of the Arts. Lakstīgala studied French horn as well as orchestral and symphonic band conducting at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music.
