Atlantis

Atlantis

Prologue and epilogue to "Der Kaiser von Atlantis" by Viktor Ullmann

for ensemble

  • Instrumentation: ensemble
  • Edition: performance material

description

I wrote the ensemble piece 'Atlantis' for Opera Factory Freiburg and their artistic director Klaus Simon who had asked me for a prologue and an epilogue to the opera 'The Emperor of Atlantis' by Viktor Ullmann. Whereas the epologue is inseparable from the opera, the prologue can be performed separately in a concert.

It was important to me that my 'surrounding' is independent, I abandoned direct musical connections almost entirely. In my imagination, the word 'Atlantis' evokes slow sounds which are raising from the depths and create a mysterious, yet manacing atmosphere. It is only two short moments that a characteristic fanfare from the oper emerges, like a sudden remembrance ... or precognition. (Anno Schreier)
