Obituaries were published in more than twenty countries following the death of Hans Werner Henze in October 2012 in Dresden: an overwhelming universal expression of the international recognition of his creative works. Henze’s collegiate presence at rehearsals and premieres, and his gratitude towards the performers of his compositions have been sorely missed since.
The loss of his musical voice is equally felt. Henze’s commitment to beauty, his elucidation of human nature, his incomparable elegance of expression in both music and words, and his humour and generosity will remain unforgotten. His compositions displayed a unique combination of timeless mastery and dedication to the contemporary world. Henze would have been celebrating his 90th birthday on 1 July 2016.
