Process made visible: Bernd Alois Zimmermann used piano pieces as models for orchestral recomposition through instrumentation. Heinz Holliger brought these forgotten pieces back to the stage and to the public eye in Cologne on the occasion of Zimmermann’s 100th birthday. These recordings reveal how Zimmermann’s arrangements re-appear among the labyrinthine network of references in his best-known works, making his compositional process more comprehensible.
