“The Imaginary Museum is the title of a book by the French
cultural politician André Malraux. Malraux argues that, due
to the dispersal of great art around the world’s museums, it
is only in one’s mind or else in book form that it’s possible
to assemble a coherent collection of art nowadays.
I decided to take the piano – that most immobile of
instruments – on an imaginary journey to various locations,
whether pictorially inspired or not. The acoustics of these
virtual locations was as important to the sound of the music
as any evocation of terrain. In practice, both factors
engender changing musical relationships between piano
and orchestra. “

This musical work depects the structure of the large
Babylonia Ziggurat. Starting at ground level, a staircase
winds up around a conical structure, decorated with passage
of visual narrative and imagery.
Gilbert’s duo for bass clarinet and marimba engages on a
similar journey, continuously climbing but also episodic.
Passages of wild virtuosic music are seperated by steady,
Colour-changes involving bass clarinet multiphonics and rich
chordal writing for the marimba are strongly featured.

Written for Sabine Mayer and the Alliage Quintett 2015 and subsequently recorded.
Scored for the seemingly unusual instrumentation of clarinet in A (doubling on C), saxophone quaret and piano, the spirit and symphonic character of the work is preserved. This unusual instrumentation also brings the opportunity to explore new colours within the ensemble.
In significant passages, the original instrment in the orchestral version (for example in solos) is indicated in parantheses.

Written in memory of Sir John Mortimer, To Notice Such Things is composed in 6 contrasting movements for flute and piano. Each movement of the work reflects an aspect of Mortimer’s personality.
Lord says of the piece, “I wanted to give the flute the job of speaking for John throughout the Suite; his laughter and his sighs, his wistfulness and occasional mild cantankerousness, his playfulness, and also the anguish and then the acceptance of his final days.”
Jon Lord is the former keyboard player for the band, Deep Purple. His work, To Notice Such Things also appears on a studio album of the same name, released in 2010.

Burlesque Op. 97
Burlesque is a jolly piece, starting with two lines of solo cello music (arco), which switches to pizzicato as the piano picks up the theme. The work parodies contrasting styles, abruptly juxtaposing a jazz idiom with a lyrical, romantic line, all the time displaying a great sense of humour in this frequent exchange. Towards the end a teasing dialogue ensues between cello and piano as they toss the jazz theme back and forth.
In 1999 Kapustin wrote three short compositions for cello and piano, Burlesque, Elegy (ED 22848) and Nearly Waltz (ED 22852).
Nearly Waltz Op. 98
Nearly Waltz refers to both the tempo and mood, but alternately switches between 5/4 and 3/4 time. The cheerful theme in the cello is accompanied by the almost stormy piano part. The middle section is in a regular waltz tempo and is framed by the key part, which again resumes the opening theme.
